Tara powder
A vegetable tanning agent that is extracted from the pods of the tara fruit. The plant with the botanical name Caesalpinia spinosa
grows endemically in Peru.
Tara is mainly used for tanning of leathers and furs and is especially suitable for easily dyeable leather and fur types. It improves
the resistance to light as well as the fullness and softness of the leather while creating a fine, tight granular and smooth leather
structure. It grants protection against rupture of the tanned material.
Tara Powder is well-suited for the production of leather for car seats and furniture. It can be used purely or in combination with
other natural or synthetic tanning agents.
Advantages of Tara Powder:
Tara does practically not contain any dyeing substances. Thus, it provides completely clear and light resistant leather. In contrast,
other vegetable tannins like Mimosa and Quebracho tend to give a reddish touch to the leather.
Tara Powder permits tanning processes free of chromium and is thus favourable for environment protection. As a vegetable substance,
Tara powder is safe in use under health aspects.
Scientific studies prove: Chromium-free leather wastes (due to tanning with Tara) can be degraded in composting facilities. With use
of vegetable tannins, the used waters do not need to be recovered in a complicated and cost-intensive chemical procedure.
